Katy Perry forced to cancel Mexico shows due to unfinished venue

Katy Perry has been forced to cancel her two concerts in Guadalajara, Mexico because the new arena is not yet ready to open.

The Firework singer announced on her Instagram Stories on Monday that she was unable to perform at Arena Guadalajara on 1 and 2 May because the venue was "not ready" to open to the public.

"Sadly, I learned that the construction of Arena Guadalajara will not be complete for their scheduled shows next week, which includes mine on May 1 and 2," she began, before explaining the lengths she went to to try and avoid the cancellation.

She continued, "Last week I sent my team to the Arena to make sure there wasn't anything we could do to make this happen but it was evident when they arrived that the venue was not ready or safe to receive my show or an audience. I wish I could fix this but it is beyond my control."

The pop star concluded her message by writing, "You guys mean the world to me and we have all been on such a beautiful journey together that I will be thinking about how I can create something special for the fans in Guadalajara in the future."

The delayed opening of Arena Guadalajara has also caused the cancellation of shows by Mexican singer Carlos Rivera and the band Intocable, according to Rolling Stone.

Perry will kick off The Lifetimes Tour, her first trek in seven years, in Mexico City on Wednesday. She will then travel around the world - performing in North America, Europe and Australia - until the tour's conclusion in December.

The tour launch comes shortly after the singer returned to Earth after going into space with Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin program. The 11-minute space flight - which also featured TV personality Gayle King and Bezos's fiancée Lauren Sánchez - blasted off from West Texas on 14 April.
