NewsMay, 5 Christie Brinkley 'shocked and pained' by Billy Joel media coverage![]() Christie Brinkley has revealed she was "shocked and pained" by media coverage of her marriage to Billy Joel. The supermodel's new memoir, Uptown Girl, detailed the headlines she found particularly hurtful. "I'll never forget the first time I read an article describing my relationship with Billy as a match between 'the beauty and the beast,'" Christie, 71, wrote, adding that the description "shocked and pained me." She went on to explain it was unusual to encounter meanness in media reports at the time. "Cruelty and name-calling weren't the commonplace behaviours they've become today," Christie, who was married to Billy from 1985-1994, recalled. "Who would say that, and how shallow could they be to judge people they'd never met? How little they actually knew." Elsewhere in the book, Christie described the lavish lengths Billy, now 75, went to to make her 30th birthday celebrations special. "Because it was a big birthday, he sent a private plane," she recounted. "As soon as I landed, he picked me up in a limo and whisked me away to an early dinner, where the waiters came dancing out with an even larger, more elaborate cake." Later, Billy pulled her onstage at his concert to serenade her with a rendition of his hit song, Uptown Girl. "Afterward, I thought how so few people were ever able to have their love publicly celebrated like that," Christie reflected. "Which amplified how we both felt about each other that night, making us almost dizzy with love."
