Kacey Musgraves has recalled how she and Miranda Lambert aired out any "old laundry" before recording a new duet together. On Wednesday, the Golden Hour hitmaker announced that she will release her seventh studio album, Middle of Nowhere, on 1 May. However, some fans were surprised to see a song titled Horses and Divorces featuring Lambert on the track listing, as the country music stars were believed to have had a falling out some years ago. In a new interview for NPR, Musgraves recalled how she "randomly" reached out to the Wranglers singer after seeing one of her Instagram posts in which she was riding a horse. "I was like, 'Well, we ain't friends, but I guess we have two things in common, horses and divorces, that's for sure. Wait, that could be a really funny song. What if it's a duet with her? What if I got her to write on it?'" she remembered. "I just randomly reached out to her and I was like, 'I know we've had our s**t over the years, but listen, we've at least got two things in common. I'm not trying to be your friend. You got your life, I have mine. But I think this would be a pretty f**king funny song." Musgraves went on to insist Lambert was immediately on board and the process felt "full circle". "We aired out any of the old laundry. We had some laughs and wrote the song in a matter of a few hours," the 37-year-old continued. "I think it could be also a micro representation of what I wish that the world would do sometimes, just f**king sit down and poke fun at each other, have a beer and call it a day." Elsewhere in the conversation, Musgraves recounted how she co-wrote the song Mama's Broken Heart with Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally, and had initially wanted to record it as her first single. But the track was allegedly pitched to Lambert "without my consent or knowledge", and the artist ended up including it on her 2011 album, Four the Record. "I knew I would have to go back to the drawing board. And ultimately, I'm really glad that I did, because it forced me to write (2012 single) Merry Go 'Round, which ended up making way more sense for me anyways, aesthetically and lyrically, to kick my whole thing off," she added. Lambert unveiled her ninth solo studio album, Postcards from Texas, in September 2024.
