Record label responds to Jett suit

A record label being sued by singer-guitarist Joan Jett and Runaways bandmate Cherie Currie over a tribute album has said the collection was made "with the best of intentions" to raise funds for cancer research.

The musicians have filed a lawsuit in the US against Main Man Records over the album featuring cover songs in homage to their early punk band. Joan and Cherie claim the label used their names to promote the album without their permission.

But Main Man Records has said it will vigorously defend itself.

The two-disc album, Take It or Leave It: A Tribute to the Queens of Noise, features covers of songs by the Runaways and is supposed to be released on June 28.

Formed in 1975, the Runaways made a splash with brash, raw songs, a rebellious attitude and a sound that blended punk and heavy metal.

The group disbanded in 1979, but the 2010 movie The Runaways, starring Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning, reignited interest. Joan and Cherie, who was the group's lead singer for a time, have done some reunion performances in recent years.

Joan went on to form another band, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, and score hits including I Love Rock N' Roll, Bad Reputation and I Hate Myself for Loving You.
