Martin Scorsese's film profile of former Beatles star George Harrison is to be screened by the BBC later this year.

The film-maker has examined the life of the late music legend through archive footage and interviews with figures such as Sir Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton for the film Living In The Material World.

His film will be screened by BBC2 in November to coincide with the tenth anniversary of Harrison's death.

Scorsese, whose film documentaries include Rolling Stones film Shine A Light, co-produced the new movie with Harrison's widow, Olivia.

Much of the footage from the film is said to have never been seen before.

He said: "Like so many millions of people, I first came to know George through the music, which was the soundtrack of our world. The Beatles' music, those beautifully lyrical guitar breaks and solos, those unforgettable songs of George's like I Me Mine or If I Needed Someone.

"George was making spiritually awake music - we all heard and felt it - and I think that was the reason that he came to occupy a very special place in our lives. So when I was offered the chance to make this picture, I jumped at it."

Living In The Material World - named after his 1973 solo album - is also being released on DVD on October 10.

Harrison, known as the "quiet Beatle", was behind Fab Four classics such as Something, Here Comes The Sun and While My Guitar Gently Weeps. He went on to have solo success with songs such as My Sweet Lord and recorded with the Traveling Wilburys as well as financing movies and exploring his spiritual side.

He died following a battle with cancer on November 29 2001.
