Restored Yellow Submarine sets sail

The Beatles movie Yellow Submarine has been hand restored frame-by-frame for release later this year.

The animated adventure, first seen in 1968, was a groundbreaking surreal tale featuring characters from Beatles songs but featuring actors voicing the band's parts.

Restorers opted not to use automatic equipment or software to tidy up the original film because of the delicate nature of the hand-drawn artwork. Instead a team worked for four months to clean each frame individually ahead of the DVD and blu-ray release on May 28.

The "songtrack" album - which features songs from the film, rather than the score which takes up much of the original Yellow Submarine - will be reissued on the same date.

The releases were announced by The Beatles' company Apple today.

The film took nearly two years to make in a fraught process which saw movie makers go through 14 different scripts and many styles of animation, including hand-tracing images from filmed sequences.

Pixar studios chief John Lasseter, writing in the sleeve notes for the re-release, says: "As a fan of animation and as a film-maker, I tip my hat to the artists of Yellow Submarine, whose revolutionary work helped pave the way for the fantastically diverse world of animation that we all enjoy today."

The film featured tracks such as Eleanor Rigby, When I'm Sixty-Four, Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds and All You Need Is Love.

A picture book version of the film will be republished next month ahead of the release.
