Brits win is 'weird' for Odell

Tom Odell has revealed that scooping the Brits Critics' Choice award is a huge honour, but it is "crazy".

The 22-year-old singer-songwriter from West Sussex was announced as the winner in December, beating out other hotly tipped artists such as AlunaGeorge and Laura Mvula, after he released his debut EP Songs From Another Love last year.

"It feels really good to get a Brit. I'm very happy. It means a lot to me," he said at the Brits nominations launch in London, where he received his gong from 2012 winner Emeli Sande.

"I grew up watching the Brits on TV every year and it's just weird because I've only just released a bit of music. And it's crazy already to have won something like that.

"But you know, I'm taking it all in my stride. It's good. I just want to get the next single right and stuff," he added.

Tom - who performed at the nominations launch - is the first male winner of the prize. Previous winners include Emeli, Adele and Jessie J.

"It's crazy that is the case. It's weird. There's a little bit more pressure there, but it's cool," he said.

Jessie, who is up for two Brits including Best Female Solo Artist, admitted that she doesn't expect to walk away with the Damien Hirst-designed statuettes this year.

"I feel like I'm just starting out so this is too good to be true. I don't think I'm going to win. It would be really nice but there's far more worthy people who should win," she said.
