First Pavarotti recording released

The first recording made by opera singer Luciano Pavarotti is being released 50 years after he made his British television debut.

The recording, an aria from Puccini's La Boheme called Che Gelida Manina which translates as Your Tiny Hand Is Frozen, lay unheard in the singer's personal archives for five decades before it was unearthed by his widow, Nicoletta Mantovani, and re-mastered for release.

British audiences first saw the singer, who died of cancer in 2007, when he appeared on Sunday Night At The London Palladium with Bruce Forsyth in 1963.

The same year he made his Royal Opera House debut and was snapped up by Decca Records, which is now releasing an album of 50 of his best tracks including Nessun Dorma - made famous by its use in the coverage of the 1990 Italy World Cup - and a string of duets with stars including Frank Sinatra, Bono and Eric Clapton.

Pavarotti, who became a worldwide star with his performances as part of the the Three Tenors, enjoyed huge commercial success and became one of the most successful opera stars of all time.

Ms Mantovani said: "It is so wonderful that Decca is keeping Luciano's memory alive in this way, particularly with the celebration of this momentous anniversary."

The album is released in October.
