Miley Cyrus scores first number one

Miley Cyrus has shot straight to the top of the charts to score her first ever UK number one single with party tune We Can't Stop.

The 20-year-old singer and actress, who first rose to fame as the lead in Disney children's show Hannah Montana, sold 128,000 copies of her new track to put an end to Swedish DJ Avicii's three-week reign with Wake Me Up.

It marks the best possible improvement on the three number 11 positions that the daughter of country star Billy Ray Cyrus previously had to her name - See You Again (2008), and The Climb and Party In The USA (2009).

Since then Miley has re-branded herself as a good girl gone bad to devastating effect, with the video for We Can't Stop featuring hip hop poses and wild party scenes.

Avicii was forced to settle for second best while Grime superstar Tinie Tempah saw Trampoline FT 2 Chainz go straight to number three ahead of the release of his second studio album, Demonstration, later this month.

The top five was completed by French DJ Cedric Gervais's house remix of Lana Del Rey's Summertime Sadness at number four and Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines FT TI and Pharrell Williams at number five.

Justine Timberlake's Take Back The Night climbed 30 places to number 29, while American rockers Kings of Leon gave a foretaste of their eagerly awaited sixth album Mechanical Bull by going straight in at number 31 with Wait For Me.

In the albums charts, Welsh brothers Richard and Adam Johnson retained top slot for a second week with their debut full-length, The Impossible Dream.

The Britain's Got Talent pair outsold their closest competitors - Grammy award-winning US duo The Civil Wars self-titled new entry - by 15,000 copies.

Nonetheless, The Civil Wars can be satisfied their second album - crafted by legendary US producer Rick Rubin - made it to number two to better their debut Barton Hollow, which peaked in the UK at number 13 in 2011.
