American rockers top charts

OneRepublic's frontman Ryan Tedder had a particularly good week at the office as the American rockers swung back to number one in the charts at the expense of Miley Cyrus.

The Colorado Springs band climbed to the top two weeks ago with Counting Stars but were beaten by the artist formerly known as Hannah Montana's Wrecking Ball last Sunday.

With the to-and-fro going their way this time, Tedder had more than one reason to celebrate - he also wrote Bonfire Heart by James Blunt, which jumped two spots to number four.

It means the 34-year-old is now a chart-topping artist in his own right in addition to writer to the stars after providing hits to the likes of Adele, Beyonce and Leona Lewis.

Most recently, he was behind Ellie Goulding's wildly popular number one single Burn.

Basking in the limelight with One Republic's own success, he said: "This is by far the coolest thing that's happened to us.

"I've had a number of number ones with other artists, but never one with this band.

"This is where I spend most of my time - these guys (guitarists Zach Filkins and Drew Brown, bassist Brent Kutzle and drummer Eddie Fisher) are like my brothers and we've been everywhere and back. This is the highlight of the year."

Two new entries completed the top five singles list, as Lawson went straight in at three with Juliet and Eminen's Rap God debuted at number five.

It is Slim Shady's second top five single in as many weeks, with expectation sky-high before the release next month of his eighth album, The Marshall Mathers LP 2.

UK pop rockers Lawson, meanwhile, can now boast an impressive five top 10 hits since getting together in 2009.

Despite a week of big comebacks from veterans Pearl Jam, Sir Paul McCartney and Cher, the albums chart crown went to young gun John Newman.

The 23-year-old from Settle in North Yorkshire, who shot to fame with guest vocals on Rudimental's number one Feel The Love last summer, went straight to the summit with debut album Tribute.

Seattle grunge originals Pearl Jam debuted at number two with Lightening Bolt and are celebrating their highest charting record in the UK since VS in 1993, which peaked at the same spot.

Sir Paul, 71, was close on their heels, entering at three with his sixteenth solo album, New, fifty years after Beatlemania first took the world by storm.

Closer To The Truth went in at number four to give 67-year-old Cher her highest-charting studio album since Love Hurts was number one some 22 years ago.

Classical crossover combo and former Britain's Got Talent finalists Jonathan And Charlotte, from Essex, completed an all-new top five with their second album Perhaps Love.

Girl group The Saturdays made a fourth career appearance in the albums top 10 with Living For The Weekend, while synthpop pioneer Gary Numan debuted at number 20 with his 20th studio album, Splinter.
