Britney hits used to deter pirates

Britney Spears hits are apparently being used by maritime security guards to scare off pirates.

The star's songs including Oops! I Did It Again and Baby One More Time are reportedly played from the decks of supertankers travelling off the coast of Africa as Somali pirates apparently hate her music and the western culture it represents.

Merchant navy officer Rachel Owens, 34, who helps guide the tankers, told The Sun: "As soon as the pirates get a blast of Britney they move on as quickly as they can.

"Her songs were chosen by security accompanying tankers because they thought the pirates would hate them the most."

If pirates start following, the tankers ignore calls to move away then Britney's hits are pumped out of speakers as an extra deterrent.

Tom Hanks is currently starring in Paul Greengrass' action thriller Captain Phillips based on the true story of Richard Phillips, whose tanker was hijacked by Somali pirates in 2009.
