Director Temple declared music icon

Film director Julien Temple, who documented the rise of the Sex Pistols, has been declared a music icon.

Julien, whose work includes The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle which starred Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs alongside members of the punk band, will receive th e icon award at the UK Music Video Awards.

The 60-year-old, whose daughter Juno has appeared in films including The Other Boleyn Girl and Atonement, has made music videos for acts including David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Duran Duran and Whitney Houston.

His 1986 musical version of Absolute Beginners, starring Patsy Kensit and with music by The Style Council and Bowie, famously flopped but he has gone on to make acclaimed documentaries about subjects including the Glastonbury Festival and the rise and fall of the US city of Detroit.

The awards are held at the Southbank Centre in central London tonight (Monday October 28).
