Flaming Lips deny split reports

The Flaming Lips have denied reports they are to split, claiming their official Twitter account has been hijacked.

Messages posted on the Oklahoma rockers' official account @theflaminglips claimed "We have sad news. We've broken up..." followed by "lol just joking guys". Both tweets were then deleted.

A message followed with a picture marking the band's 30th anniversary and a note adding: "That last announcement was a bit premature."

Frontman Wayne Coyne reassured fans on Twitter, saying: "The Flaming Lips twitter has been hijacked!!!!"

One of the tweets posted and later deleted urged Flaming Lips fans to buy the new single from boyband and former X Factor contestants Union J.

It said: "GUYS GO CHECK OUT @unionjworld NEW SINGLE #BeautifulLife ON ITUNES ITS REALLY GOOD!"

The Flaming Lips were formed in 1983 by Wayne and his brother Mark. Mark is no longer in the band, but Wayne is still fronting the current line-up.

This year the psychedelic rockers released their 13th studio album The Terror. They were one of the headline acts at this year's Bestival.
