Wilson enlists Nighy to voice poem

The Voice coach Ricky Wilson has enlisted Bill Nighy to voice a contemporary poem inspired by the likes of war poets Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon.

Kaiser Chiefs lead singer Wilson wrote The Occupation, with its references to warfare, and it has been included as a spoken word track on his band's new album.

It will come later this month on the Leeds band's new release Education, Education, Education & War.

Singer Wilson, who joined The Voice for its third series this year, was inspired to write the poem when he was preparing lyrics for the album and was influenced by repeatedly hearing about this year's commemoration of the beginning of the First World War.

A friend of the band, Cally Callomon - who has been in the music business for many years and also looks after the estate of Nick Drake - brought Nighy on board.

The band's frontman said the actor's voice was "perfect" for the verse.

Wilson said the poem was not about any particular conflict, and it was up to the listener what they made of it.

He told The Independent it could be about "World War One, or Afghanistan or space travel".

"When you study poetry at school, you're told what it's about by your revision aid and you go 'that's not what I got out of it at all."

"I want people to get out of it what they get out of it," he said.
