Cher's Believe is top female hit

Cher's hit Believe is the best-selling single by a woman ever.

The singer topped a list of big-selling songs by female artists compiled by the Official Charts Company for International Women's Day, according to Metro.

Believe was released in 1998 and became the biggest seller that year, as well as shifting 1.79 million copies to date.

Celine Dion was the only artist to appear twice in the chart, with My Heart Will Go On which featured in the film Titanic at number four, and Think Twice at number eight.

Whitney Houston came in second with her hit from The Bodyguard, I Will Always Love You, while Britney Spears completed the top three with her debut single, Hit Me Baby One More Time.

Adele's Someone Like You reached number five in the top sellers, Jennifer Rush was just behind her with The Power Of Love and the Spice Girls' first single, Wannabe, was in seventh.

Rihanna made number nine with We Found Love, the only entry to feature a man in the artist credit (Calvin Harris) and All Saints rounded out the top 10 with their debut song Never Ever.

The full list named the top 40 biggest-selling songs by female artists.
