Egan never expected solo success

Kian Egan has said he never expected to get a shot at solo success after Westlife split, but has his I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! win to thank for the chance to release a new album.

The former Westlife star won the jungle title last year and revealed he had seen a revival in his career options since his stint in the Australian camp.

He admitted: "I kind of came out of Westlife thinking that was probably going to be it for me in music for quite some time, unless Westlife get back together or something majorly changes.

"I was thinking I had such an amazing career in Westlife that I never expected to be in this situation where I had my own record deal and then when I went in to do the jungle, that's what turned it around, I got offered a record deal off the back of that."

Kian has put together his first solo album, Home, a collection of covers of some of his favourite lesser known songs.

He continued: "I wasn't really one of the lead singers in Westlife, so I thought unless you're a lead singer in that scenario I don't really see why the record label would have any interest, but that changed with winning the jungle.

"I never really expected it to come along... I always just thought maybe I'd do a bit of TV work. I was really taken aback by how much love it was being given and how people were being nice to me and how people were saying how good I sounded."

Of the style of his solo work, Kian said: "It's not a million miles away from what we did in Westlife, but it's definitely a bit more rocky. My voice is a bit more rocky than Shane (Filan) or Mark's (Feehily)."

Home is released on March 17.
