NewsJuly, 4 Madonna meets with Kenya's First Lady to promote female empowermentMadonna celebrated Independence Day (04Jul16) by promoting "female empowerment" for women around the world. The queen of pop is in Kenya, Africa, raising awareness for various causes, including the Beyond Zero campaign. Margaret Kenyatta, the First Lady of Kenya, set up the initiative to help mothers and children overcome HIV-related issues and it's been so successful that in 2014 she was named UN Person of the Year. Fellow philanthropist Madonna, who is a goodwill ambassador for Child Welfare in Malawi, as well as the founder of the charity Raising Malawi - which aims to prevent extreme poverty and hardship by Malawi's orphans - met Margaret recently, and shared a photo of the pair on Instagram as the U.S. celebrates its national holiday, Independence Day. "Meeting with Her Excellency Margaret Kenyatta, the first lady of Kenya!" the 57-year-old pop star captioned the shot of them both. "Learning about her Beyond Zero Campaign which targets eliminating maternal and child mortality in Kenya and hoping to join forces to promote Female Empowerment! Around the World! happy 4th!" Over the weekend (02-03Jul16) Madonna, who adopted 10-year-old daughter Mercy from Malawi after setting up her foundation dedicated to the country, visited Africa's largest slum Kibera and spent time with its young dwellers. Her trip was in aid of Shining Hope for Communities, a non-profit organisation aiming to provide girls in Kenyan slums with free education, health care, food and psychological services. The musician posted a series of photos documenting her time there, such as one showing a child's hand poking through a gap in a wall. "Where there is light there is hope in Kibera! Amazing work being done by @shofco," she captioned the poignant picture, after uploading a photo of a dirty stream full of rubbish. "Imagine this is where your water comes from! @shofco is working to change this in Kibera, Africa's largest slum," she captioned the photo of the brook.
