Beyonce lands four Emmy nominations for Lemonade

Beyonce has earned her first Primetime Emmy nomination as a director after scoring four nods for her TV special Lemonade.

The superstar stunned fans in April (16), when she debuted her brand new album, Lemonade, with accompanying visuals in a film of the same name, and now her work has been recognised in four categories at the 2016 prizegiving.

Lemonade has been named among the contenders for Outstanding Variety Special, going up against Adele Live In New York City, the TV broadcast of the British soul singer's one-off performance at Radio City Music Hall last year (15).

The Late Late Show host James Corden's hour-long episode of his popular Carpool Karaoke segment, which featured Jennifer Lopez, is also shortlisted, as well as The Kennedy Center Honors, and comedienne Amy Schumer's Live At The Apollo special.

Meanwhile, Beyonce and her filmmaking collaborator Kahlil Joseph are up for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special, a field which also features Beth McCarthy-Miller (Adele Live In New York City), Louis J. Horvitz (58th Grammy Awards), Glenn Weiss (The Kennedy Center Honors), Thomas Kail and Alex Rudzinski (Grease: Live), and funnyman Chris Rock, who took charge of the camera for Amy Schumer: Live At The Apollo.

The directing nomination is Beyonce's third time being recognised at the Primetime Emmys - she previously earned a nod in 2013 for Outstanding Special Class - Short-Format Live-Action Entertainment Programs for her Super Bowl Halftime Show, and again in 2015, for Outstanding Special Class Program for the broadcast of her One the Run Tour: Beyonce and Jay Z.

Lemonade's other two acknowledgements are for Outstanding Picture Editing for Variety Programming for Bill Yukich, and Outstanding Production Design for a Variety, Nonfiction, Event or Award Special for Hannah Beachler, Chris Britt, and Kim Murphy.

The Super Bowl 50 Halftime Show, which was headlined by Coldplay and included appearances by Beyonce and Bruno Mars, also landed two nominations for Outstanding Special Class Program and Outstanding Lighting Design and Lighting Direction for a Variety Special.

Another notable Emmys nod went to songwriter Diane Warren, who is up for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for writing the music and lyrics for 'Til It Happens To You. The song featured on Oscar-nominated documentary The Hunting Ground, which shines a light on sex attacks at U.S. college campuses.

Lady Gaga, who performs the tune, is credited as a co-writer on the track, but interestingly, her name is not listed for the Emmys.

The 2016 Primetime Emmy Awards will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and take place in Los Angeles on 18 September (16).
