NewsMay, 1 Lorde admits Charli XCX collaboration 'gave her a kick' with writing new album![]() Lorde has admitted working with Charli XCX on the Girl, So Confusing remix gave her the kick she needed while writing her new album Virgin. The Royals singer revealed on BBC Radio 1 that working with Charli last year gave her more confidence to express her vulnerabilities with her new music. On Girl, So Confusing, Charli honestly sings about not knowing if a fellow singer liked her - which was later identified as Lorde. The New Zealand hitmaker then appeared on a remix in which she candidly confessed her own insecurities. Revealing how the song impacted her own music, Lorde said, "We were quite a way into (making Virgin) at that point but (Charli's album) Brat coming out really gave me a kick in a lot of ways. It forced me to further define what I was doing because Charli had so masterfully defined everything about Brat and I knew that what I was doing was very distinct to that. "It's just the amazing thing when a peer throws the gauntlet down like that, you're like 'OK, yeah, we've gotta pick it up.' I've spoken to a lot of peers who've all had the same feelings. It's very sick and I'm so grateful to her." The 28-year-old explained that she had been trying to express herself "in this very naked way" in her music and Charli was doing the same thing "from the other side of the coin" as their songs are so different. "Doing the remix together and meeting her in that place of rugged vulnerability and cracking open the thing... People responded really well to that - I was like 'OK, cool, this is a good thing to be doing,'" she shared. "I really suffer from this thing of not feeling my own power... and the remix just started me up and I was like, 'No, no, people are listening and they care and your words carry real weight.'" Charli and Lorde worked out their differences thanks to the song, which recently performed live at Coachella festival in April. Lorde's fourth album Virgin will be released on 27 June.
