Jill Sobule dies in house fire

Jill Sobule has died in a house fire.

The indie singer-songwriter, whose 1995 single I Kissed a Girl was the first openly gay song to reach the Billboard Top 20, was 66 years old.

Sobule's team released a formal statement informing the public she had passed away in the early hours of the morning after a house fire overtook her home in Woodbury, Minnesota.

"Jill Sobule was a force of nature and human rights advocate whose music is woven into our culture," her manager, John Porter, said via a press release. "I was having so much fun working with her. I lost a client & a friend today. I hope her music, memory, & legacy continue to live on and inspire others."

Another single, Supermodel, became a hit after it was included in the soundtrack for the 1995 comedy movie, Clueless, starring Alicia Silverstone.

Over her career, Sobule published 12 studio albums as well as an autobiographical musical titled F**k 7th Grade.

"I was fortunate enough to get to know Jill beyond a professional relationship," the singer's agent Craig Grossman said in a statement. "No one made me laugh more. Her spirit and energy shall be greatly missed within the music community and beyond."
