Harry Styles Honors Dolly Parton at MSG

Harry Styles Honors Dolly Parton at MSG

At his opening Madison Square Garden concert on Wednesday, Harry Styles took a moment to pay tribute to the late Dolly Parton, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 80.

Near the end of the show, the British pop star addressed the crowd, saying, "We've got a couple of songs left for you, but first I wanna say a proper thank you to all the musicians over the years who have inspired me. Dolly, we love you. Thank you so much."

Following his words, Dolly's 1974 hit I Will Always Love You – later popularized by Whitney Houston – played through the arena's speakers. Harry and his band stood on stage as he encouraged fans to sing along and light up their phones. Footage captured by The Hollywood Reporter shows Drew Barrymore and broadcaster Gayle King singing along together in the audience.

After about a minute of the song, Harry launched into the final two tracks of the night: Sign of the Times and Aperture.

Wednesday's performance marked the first of an unprecedented 30-night residency at Madison Square Garden, part of his Together, Together tour. During the show, the 32-year-old reflected on his debut at the venue with One Direction in 2012.

"I had the great privilege of playing this building for the first time when I was 18 years old," he said, according to a video posted by Variety. "There's a gentleman who's working here who was working here then, who shared with me that when I got out of the car that day, I kissed the floor and said, 'I've made it to Madison Square Garden!'".

The As It Was singer has been touring since May, with shows in Amsterdam, London, Mexico City, and São Paulo, Brazil. Fans in New York were surprised to find that he had completely revamped the setlist for the residency, creating essentially a new show that runs until 31 October. After the residency, Harry will wrap up the tour with dates in Melbourne and Sydney, Australia, in November and December.
