McCartney hails 'best live act' win

Sir Paul McCartney was honoured as the year's best live act at a respected music awards event.

The music legend - who still has a hectic gig schedule at the age of 69 - won a public vote to be awarded the title at the Silver Clef Awards.

Other winners at today's event included Annie Lennox - who earlier this week collected her OBE from Buckingham Palace - and Liza Minnelli.

Sir Paul - who was unable to attend - said of the accolade: "This is phenomenal news. To be voted the Best Live Act by the public when the competition was so amazingly strong is very special indeed."

The annual charity event, formally known as the Nordoff Robbins O2 Silver Clef Awards, was staged at the London Hilton, Park Lane.

Lennox - who tasted chart success with The Tourists, Eurythmics and as a solo star - took the main prize, the Silver Clef to mark her achievements in music over the past 30-plus years.

Singer and actress Minnelli collected the Icon Award while double Brit Award winner Tinie Tempah took the Newcomer Award, in a year that has seen him top the album chart with his debut Disc-Overy.

Canadian stars Arcade Fire were handed the Ambassadors Of Rock Award, while Scottish rock act Biffy Clyro - who reached new heights when their track Many Of Horror was covered by X Factor winner Matt Cardle - were named Best British Band.

Chart stars McFly took the Digital Innovation prize for their website.
