Dumont wins Ding Dong chart battle

The ding-dong over this week's singles charts has ended with DJ Duke Dumont holding on to the number one spot.

Dumont's single Need U (100%), which features A*M*E, was challenged by a 51-second recording from musical The Wizard of Oz.

Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead, adopted by those protesting against the legacy of Baroness Thatcher, entered the charts at number two following the former prime minister's death last Monday.

During the Radio 1 chart show, DJ Jameela Jamil said there was a "brand new entry at number two" before introducing Newsbeat music's reporter. Sinead Garvan explained the context of the single's appearance in the charts to listeners of the station, which has a target audience of 15 to 29-year-olds.

She told them: "Tributes poured in from across the world for Margaret Thatcher when she died on Monday, but there were also people who threw street parties around the UK. An online campaign began in 2007 to try to get this song, Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead, to number one in the charts the week Lady Thatcher died."

A short segment of the song, featuring the lyrics: "Ding dong, the wicked witch is dead", was then played for a matter of seconds. Garvan then said Lady Thatcher had "strongly divided opinion", before listeners heard a brief instrumental section of the recording. The show also asked members of the public for their thoughts, with mixed opinions being aired.

Just Give Me A Reason by Pink, featuring Nate Ruess, went down a place to number three, with Pompeii by Bastille at number four and Feel This Moment by Pitbull featuring Christina Aguilera climbing three places to number five, the Official Charts Company said.

There was a new entry at number 35 for the Nonsensibles with I'm in Love With Margaret Thatcher. The other new entry in the top 40 was Scottish singer Nina Nesbitt, who debuted at 21 with Stay Out.

In the album charts, Paramore's self-titled fourth album ended Justin Timberlake's three-week stint at number one. It went straight to the top, outselling Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience by just over two copies to one, and is the second number one album from the US rock band.

Emeli Sande's Our Version Of Events went up three places to number four and has now spent 61 weeks in the top 10. Night Visions, the debut album by Imagine Dragons, went down three places and is now at number five.
