NewsSeptember, 9 Elton John rocks Rock in Rio with 24 songs
Elton John delivered a marathon 24-song performance at the Rock in Rio festival in Brazil, much to the delight of the massive crowd. The British music legend moved his slot forward by 65 minutes on Monday night, leading many to suspect he would cut his show short because of the thunderstorms that had plagued the city for three days. Instead, he played a full two-hour-and-15-minute set, with the rain easing just in time. His set outshone those of other headliners at this year's festival, according to Billboard: Foo Fighters played 19 songs, Avenged Sevenfold 14, and Calvin Harris 21. John explained that he decided to come to Brazil after wrapping his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour in July 2023 because the country had been left off the itinerary. "I felt a little mean about that," he said. "I accepted Rock in Rio's invitation to thank you once again for all the love you've shown me throughout my career." The show was a sell-out, drawing more than 100,000 people on Monday despite the grim weather forecast. The Brazilian audience sang along from the opening number, Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, and continued through hits like Tiny Dancer, Sacrifice, Rocket Man, Candle in the Wind, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Sad Songs (Say So Much) and Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me. John dedicated Crocodile Rock to the Brazilian fans.
