MKS: We were so young as Sugababes

Siobhan Donaghy has said she, Mutya Buena and Keisha Buchanan sacrificed their youth to try and make it in the music business the first time round.

Siobhan was just 16 when the original Sugababes released their first single Overload, and left soon afterwards due to tensions with her bandmates. But she told ES Magazine how the band were getting on much better as women.

She said: "Looking back, there was a lot of divide and conquer going on. The adult world around us wanted to manage the environment and make it a business, and maybe forgot we were young and our happiness was important.

"We were teenagers. We weren't even old enough to drink! They saw us as interchangeable - it was all about the band, not the individuals, and that's not good for your self-esteem."

And the 29-year-old singer admitted their initial reunion meeting last year felt strange.

"That was so strange," she said. "We met up in The Lanesborough. The last time we'd seen each other we'd been teenagers in our tracksuit bottoms having KFC and our parents were there, and here we were having this fabulous dinner and cocktails. We were quite shocked to find we got on really well."

Mutya Keisha Siobhan are interviewed in this week's ES Magazine, available at www.standard.co.uk/lifestyle/esmagazine.
