Gene Simmons: Winehouse not an icon

Amy Winehouse and Kurt Cobain are not music legends, according to Kiss frontman Gene Simmons.

The rocker told Team Rock Radio that their had been no true music icons since the mid 1980s, according to Digital Spy.

Gene reeled off a list of music greats, including his own rock band Kiss, saying: "Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, The Who and just on and so on. And through the '70s, Aerosmith, Kiss, Led Zeppelin."

But he added: "Now from 1984 until today, name one superstar that's bigger than their music, and not just somebody that's recorded one or two records, but another Queen or another AC/DC? None, you can't name one."

He said that the late Nirvana star Kurt and British singer Amy, who died in 2011, had not produced enough records to be called legends.

"Kurt Cobain - no, that's one or two records. That's not enough. Amy Winehouse - that's one or two records. That's not enough.

"What, just 'cause you died, that makes you an icon? No, no," he said.
