Blur pull out of festival headliner

Blur have announced that they have pulled out of their headline slot at Australian festival Big Day Out.

The band were due to lead the line-up of the music festival which tours the country in January and February in 2014, but according to NME they posted their drop out announcement on their page on Facebook.

Blur's post read: "Devastated to report that Blur won't be performing at BDO in 2014. It's a shock that it has come to this. Only 8 weeks to go, the band feels that with the constantly shifting goalposts and challenging conditions of the organisers, they can't let it drag on any longer and want to make this announcement, to be clear to Blur fans that they won't be there.

"We've done our very best to work with the organisers and considered every option to make it happen, but they've let us down and let everyone else down too."

But event organisers said that they were baffled by the decision.

Festival investor AJ Maddah tweeted to fans: "Am trying to find out [what's happened] myself. Far as I know BDO gave into every demand within the possibility of curfews & public safety."

He added: "Everyone at BDO is absolutely devastated and confused by this turn of events. All we can do is to replace them and bring you the best show possible.

"We're working on that now. We have a list of targets and are making contact with them all, everyone at BDO will be working through the night to find replacement."

Other headline acts at the Big Day Out include Pearl Jam and Arcade Fire.
