Smith on 'Brand New for 2014' list

Chart-topping singer Sam Smith - who scored a hit as vocalist on Naughty Boy's La La La - is among a shortlist of ten tips for the top for next year, announced by MTV.

The broadcaster unveiled the artists in the running for its Brand New For 2014 with an overall winner to be chosen in a public vote and announced in February.

Acts which have previously been given a push by inclusion on the annual shortlist include Tom Odell, Tinie Tempah and Jessie J.

Another nominee Maria Naffah entered an "unsigned" contest to win a place on the list.

The others in contention are Banks, Ella Eyre, E lyar Fox, George Ezra, Joel Compass, Kwabs, Royal Blood and The Vamps, who supported McFly and Selena Gomez this year.

Voting opens on December 16.
