It's A Sin's Olly Alexander and Elton John tease surprise Brit Awards performance

Elton John and Years & Years' Olly Alexander seem likely to perform together at The Brit Awards on Tuesday after teasing the collaboration on social media.

The piano-man has reportedly agreed to a surprise collaboration with Years & Years frontman Olly Alexander after praising his work hit Channel 4 drama It’s A Sin.

The social media teasing first came from Elton who posted It’s on a brightly coloured background on Monday, then Olly's band Years & Years posted A in matching font, with the Brit Awards official account spelling out the word Sin on the same background.

Fans will no doubt be beside themselves with excitement for what we are anticipating will be an iconic performance.

The collaboration will reportedly be of the classic Pet Shop Boys’ song It’s A Sin, which shares its name with Russell T Davies’ critically acclaimed drama that starred Olly Alexander.

A Brits insider told The Sun: “Elton and Olly have become unlikely pals and when the idea was floated that they should perform together on the night they jumped at it. It has been a last-minute decision and it is all being kept hush hush so there will be a surprise for viewers, but they have been working hard to put on something really special.”

The rocket man Elton heaped praise on It’s A Sin following it’s release on Channel 4 and gushed about it on social media.

He said: “It’s A Sin is an incredibly moving account of the arrival of AIDS in the UK in the 1980’s. Watching it, so many sad and devastating memories came flooding back. Many people were callous, ignorant and cruel. Thank God we have come so far since then. Hats off to @russelltdavies63 on creating this moving testament to a pivotal and important moment in LGBTQ history. The cast are sublime. Congratulations all round. A triumph of creativity and humanity.”

The TV show from BAFTA Award winning writer Davies explores the AIDS crisis in England in the 80s, following a group of friends including gay people and an ally who fought for them, and has been acclaimed as heart-breaking and gritty.

Queer As Folk writer Davies loosely based It’s A Sin on his own experiences in the 80s.

Years & Years singer Olly starred alongside legends like Neil Patrick Harris and Keeley Hawes.

Legendary singer Elton John loved the show so much that he invited Olly to dinner during a phone call with him on his Apple music radio show in February.

He said: “I have to say, being a gay man and having lived through that time, this is probably one of the best things I've seen on television, ever! For those of you who haven't seen it, you must see it, it will have a lasting impact.”

The 2021 Brit Awards will be hosted by Jack Whitehall at the O2 arena, the first indoor music event in over a year.

It will be held in accordance with government guidelines and bosses will release 2,500 free tickets to key workers.
