A$AP Rocky admits gun assault trial 'handicapped' his songwriting

A$AP Rocky has admitted his gun assault trial took a toll on his ability to make music.

In February, a jury in Los Angeles found the rapper, real name Rakim Mayers, not guilty of two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm over claims he fired a gun at his former friend A$AP Relli during an argument in 2021.

Speaking to Variety for an interview published on Tuesday, Rocky revealed he is back in the recording studio and working on new music inspired by recent events.

"I'm writing about these past four or five years that I had this over me, and it's been kind of handicapping me," he said.

Rocky went on to note that he learned a lot of lessons over the course of the trial and has had "trust issues" for a while.

"I can't necessarily blame it on my last situation. But what I did learn is you've gotta accept that everybody's not good people; you're not gonna run into a solid person every time. Not everybody's gonna handle situations like you," the 36-year-old continued. "Once you accept that you're not responsible for nobody's actions but yours... That's where I'm at - like, 'Yo, focus on your own actions.' Because I ain't perfect. I'm human too, and we all f**k up."

Rocky has been dating Rihanna since 2020, with the couple sharing sons RZA, two, and Riot, 21 months.

At the 2025 Met Gala on Monday, the Umbrella hitmaker announced she is expecting a third baby.

Elsewhere in the conversation, the A$AP Forever hitmaker promoted his upcoming movie Highest 2 Lowest, in which he appears opposite Denzel Washington.

Directed by Spike Lee, the film will premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival this month.
