Lorde's 'modern mystic' Met Gala outfit represented where she's at 'gender-wise'

Lorde's daring outfit for the 2025 Met Gala represented where she's at "gender-wise".

While speaking to Emma Chamberlain for Vogue at the Tailored for You-themed fashion event on Monday night, the singer-songwriter revealed the silver Thom Browne ensemble was actually an "Easter egg" for her upcoming album Virgin.

Noting that the design was inspired by a cummerbund, Lorde - real name Ella Yelich-O'Connor - explained: "This is custom Thom Browne, It's kind of my creation. It's something of an Easter egg."

"All will be revealed. I just love the open back," she continued. "To me, it represents where I'm at gender-wise. I feel like a man and a woman, you know?"

After announcing her fourth studio album late last month, Lorde hinted at her "gender broadening" in an interview for Document Journal.

And in an Instagram post shared on Tuesday, the Royals hitmaker gushed over the "joy and energy" within the room at the Met Gala.

"Very very special rich Met that I'm grateful to have attended, with thanks to Thom Browne for the modern mystic attire," she captioned a series of photos taken before the bash. "It was amazing to feel so much joy and energy and pain and healing and reclamation that had happened, was happening, on the carpet and in the room, I'm grateful to have been invited into that space."

In addition, Lorde, 28, noted she had added her grandmother's paua (abalone) shell brooches to her jacket for the night.

"In his speech (Met Gala co-chair) Colman Domingo said thank your ancestors, he was talking specifically to Black people, but it was a beautiful thing to have said, I touched the brooches and did so," the New Zealand-born star added.

Virgin is set to drop on 27 June.
