NewsNovember, 4 Mastodon seek dismissal of Brent Hinds estate lawsuit
Mastodon have responded to a lawsuit filed by the estate of their late guitarist Brent Hinds, asking a court in Atlanta to throw out some of the claims. Brann Dailor, Bill Kelliher and Troy Sanders made the request on Monday, arguing that certain claims "fail as a matter of law". Hinds died at 51 in a motorcycle crash in Atlanta in August 2025, when his Harley-Davidson hit a car that did not yield at an intersection. He was found unresponsive at the scene. His death came a few months after Mastodon announced that his 25-year run with the group was ending, and while he was still negotiating the terms of his departure. A week before the crash, he wrote in an Instagram comment: "They kicked me out." His family is seeking to cash out his 25 per cent stake in the band's operations, contending that the $80,000 (£60,000) they received after his death was too little. In the filing, the band members said there was no question about what Hinds meant to the group. "His contributions to the band's legacy are undeniable, and his death was a profound loss. None of that is in dispute," it reads. "But honouring Hinds' legacy does not require rewriting the agreements governing his business interests or imposing obligations on his former bandmates that Georgia law does not recognise." After his death, the musicians shared their grief on social media, describing themselves as heartbroken and shocked and saying they were still processing the loss of "this creative force" with whom they had shared so many triumphs and milestones.
