Music fans flock to park festival

Tens of thousands of music lovers will descend on a corner of rural Scotland for the T in the Park festival.

Crowds of up to 85,000 a day are expected at the event which features stars including Beyonce, Coldplay and the Foo Fighters. However fans are likely to need waterproofs and wellies as heavy rain and possible thunderstorms are predicted.

Campers began arriving at the site at Balado in Kinross-shire on the eve of the event on Thursday and more will arrive on Friday, the first full day of the musical extravaganza.

On Friday revellers can enjoy performances by the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Tom Jones and The View. Other bands performing over the course of the weekend include Pulp, Blondie, Manic Street Preachers and Scotland's homegrown stars KT Tunstall and Calvin Harris.

Revellers are likely to face wet weather on Friday, though there may be some bright intervals. Steve Ellison, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather forecasting arm of the Press Association, said: "There are likely to be a few showers developing during the morning with some sunny spells, a few heavy showers and possibly thunder. That will carry on through the afternoon but should die out during the evening."

Forecasters predict the wet weather will continue throughout the event, which runs from 8-10 July.

Tayside Police is warning revellers about the dangers of drugs following reports of high strength ecstasy being sold in Scotland.

Chief Superintendent Craig Suttie, event commander for T in the Park said: "We are aware of an ecstasy tablet that is being peddled in certain parts of Scotland that is reported to be six times the strength of other ecstasy pills. Clearly, anyone who takes such a drug is dicing with death.

"Indeed, anyone who takes drugs can have no inkling of what its strength is or what other chemicals it might contain. Please listen to the advice and avoid drugs altogether. Our officers will take action against anyone we suspect of dealing or using illegal drugs - at T in the Park or anywhere else."

Police said the Citizen T initiative launched last year would continue for the 2011 festival. It encourages positive community behaviour, including looking out for friends and fellow campers, binning litter, taking your tent home at the end of the weekend and having fun while staying safe.
