Coldplay and Beyonce wow crowds

Festival favourites Coldplay have brought the first full day of T in the Park to a close following on from a show-stopping performance from Beyonce.

With a performance of Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall, the band ended the first full day of Scotland's largest music festival after being on the Main Stage for more than an hour.

Fireworks lit up the sky to open the set as they sang hit after hit including Yellow, The Scientist and Clocks.

Fans donned their wellies and danced in the mud as American singer Beyonce belted out favourites including Say My Name and Single Ladies after opening the set with Crazy In Love.

Earlier, rain threatened to engulf Balado Airfield in Kinross-shire as heavy downpours fell on Saturday afternoon. However, the rain stayed off as the crowd sang along with the superstar singer who greeted fans in the front row as she performed closing song Halo.

Alan Robertson, 42, from Glasgow said: "She's beautiful and amazing, she knows how to put on a fantastic show."

Jaclyn Clark, 23, a student from Edinburgh, said: "She sang so much Destiny's Child stuff which everybody knows and got everybody dancing. I thought it was brilliant when she went into the crowd, you could see how emotional some people were to get to shake her hand. She's definitely been my favourite so far, no surprises there."

Thousands more fans packed out the festival's other stages for performances from Primal Scream, Swedish House Mafia and The Strokes.

Organisers praised the behaviour of the 85,000 people a day heading to the music extravaganza. Geoff Ellis, festival director, said: "There's a really nice level of camaraderie, which there always is at T. Everyone seems really chilled out and in a happy kind of mood."

Chief Superintendent Craig Suttie, event commander, said: "I'm delighted with the way T in the Park 2011 is going. As with previous years there is a real carnival atmosphere at the event with the crowd in good spirits."
