Goulding: I'll beat Gaga to No 1

Ellie Goulding has laid down the gauntlet, declaring she can beat Lady Gaga to the number one spot.

In the US Gaga is locked in a chart battle with Katy Perry after she brought forward the release of her new single Applause. But in the UK Gaga faces competition for the top spot from British singer Ellie's dance track Burn, which is currently in the lead.

Ellie told the Metro: "It feels quite funny because I remember there was a similar thing when Lights, my album, was up against Gaga's and it somehow got to number one above her album, so it feels like that again.

"It's her big comeback single and she hasn't released anything in a while. Hopefully mine will stay at the top. It's put up a really good fight."

But the 26-year-old singer confessed it felt strange to be competing in the big leagues with some of her pop heroes.

She said: "It's mad. I don't put myself on as high a level as Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. I've still got a long way to go. I've toured with Katy and I met Lady Gaga when I won the Brit award but they've both been an inspiration to me."
