Wretch 32: I cope with malfunctions

Wretch 32 has revealed he can handle most on-stage malfunctions now - because he has experienced so many.

The Black And White rapper, who closed the Radio 1 Xtra stage at the Leeds music festival on Saturday (August 25) admitted he has even performed a gig when his in-ear monitors didn't work and he couldn't hear the drums accompaniment.

"I'm not nervous because... everything can go wrong but I know I can handle it. If my mic cuts out, I'll get another mic. If my in-ears go, I've performed in places where I couldn't hear, so this is nothing," he said.

"One time, my in-ears were messed up and for a part of it, I couldn't hear the drums. I just looked at my drummer and I was watching him play and I was rapping along to that.

"I could keep in time by seeing what he's hitting. When you can do something like that, you know you can almost do anything," added the 28-year-old.

Wretch, whose real name is Jermaine Sinclair, said he was inspired to pursue a musical career after seeing Jamaican-English rapper Klashnekoff (Darren Kandler). He is working on his third album, the follow-up to 2011's Black And White.

"I went to watch Klashnekoff at the Jazz Cafe in 2008 and that was the turning point. That was one of the first sold-out solo rapper shows I went to," he recalled.

"Just watching the way he held the stage and the way he had the crowd, I thought, 'Wow, it was actually possible for a UK MC to rip up a show in the UK.' We've always been a lot more open to Americans so when I watched that, it made me realise that it is possible to keep pushing through."
