Jack White mourns death of brother Edward Gillis

Jack White has announced that his brother Edward has died. The The White Stripes frontman shared the news with fans on social media on Saturday 24 October, posting a photo of his late brother playing an electric guitar alongside a tribute.

Edward Gerard Gillis, known as Eddie, passed away that morning after what Jack described as a tough fight with cancer. He leaves behind his wife and two children.

In his post, the 51-year-old musician – whose real name is John Anthony Gillis – wrote that the world had lost a beautiful soul. Jack, the youngest of 10 children, called Ed caring, funny and generous, and said everybody loved him. He remembered his brother as a proud husband to Angie and a devoted father to Amelia and Garrett, someone who could leave people laughing so hard they fell out of their chairs.

Eddie spent the last decade of his life running the boutique vinyl-record press Third Man Pressing, and Jack also noted that he had earned acclaim as a pastry chef. "He did so much while he was on this planet," Jack wrote.

Music ran in the family, and according to Jack it was Eddie who first carried that reputation. While Jack was still only playing drums, his older brother took up the guitar and proved excellent at it. Jack said he felt lucky to have played music with him at various points in their lives.

Jack closed his tribute by recalling the simple lessons his big brother passed on over the years, among them how to string a guitar, how to fish on the Detroit river and how to drive a stick shift. He called Eddie an amazing big brother and said he hated to see him go, but was glad he is at peace. "God bless you Eddie," he wrote.
