Kelly Clarkson Calls Out Brooklyn Store Owner

Kelly Clarkson has spoken out against the owners of a Brooklyn, New York boutique, saying she was treated poorly during a recent visit.

The singer posted on Instagram on Saturday, comparing the way a salesperson at Art of Play brushed her off to the behaviour of Julia Roberts's character in the 1990 film Pretty Woman.

A spokesperson for the store later said Clarkson had asked about buying a bird automaton called Molly, but that the item is fixed to the wall for good and cannot be sold.

Clarkson, a former daytime talk show host, went back to Instagram on Sunday and disputed the owner's version of events.

She recalled pointing at a price tag on the wall labelled Singing Bird and asking whether the piece was for sale, and said the response she got was a condescending one: that it was available for $15,000, and that the salesperson could look for something similar if she wanted.

According to the 44-year-old, that exchange never happened in the way the store described, and now the item is not for sale at all. She called the owner both rude and dishonest.

Clarkson also stressed that she is a keen supporter of small businesses and understands their importance, but argued that being a small business does not give anyone the right to treat customers badly.

She added that kindness costs nothing, and that while she does not usually call people out publicly, this case was an exception. The store itself, she said, is genuinely cool, even if its owner is not.

The Because of You singer also shared an image of Molly showing the $15,000 (£11,300) price tag.

A representative for Art of Play then responded once more, saying the store had offered Clarkson a nearly identical automaton at the same price, or a different singing bird automaton.

The representative added that the store had contacted Clarkson directly in an effort to clear the air, and that they wish her well and hope everyone can laugh about the misunderstanding one day.
