Jack Antonoff on love songs after Qualley split

Jack Antonoff has said that singing love songs in the wake of his split from his wife, Margaret Qualley, has felt "really beautiful".

Speaking to The Guardian, the Bleachers frontman explained that he had doubts at first about performing certain songs, including You and Forever, on the band's Bleachers Forever World Tour.

He and the Maid actress separated quietly in July, three years into their marriage.

Antonoff described wrestling with the decision, weighing whether to change the setlist before concluding that his promise to his audience was to be honest about how he feels, even if that meant standing behind the songs indefinitely.

After thinking it over, the producer came to see that performing them for a crowd could carry "great power" as well.

"Anyone could relate to the terrible sadness and pain, but there's a great power to it also," the 42-year-old said. "It's actually been really beautiful." He went on to describe the experience of people coming together, knowing what he had written the song about and how it must feel for him now, while also bringing their own meaning to it – holding all of that and celebrating it.

Antonoff added that the past cannot be rewritten in any case, and that he would rather go through something publicly than escape it privately.

He and Qualley married in August 2023. The 32-year-old also appeared in the music video for the Bleachers track Tiny Moves.
