NewsSeptember, 4 Soul Train Awards Return After Three-Year Hiatus
The Soul Train Awards are making a comeback. On Thursday, BET producers announced that the iconic ceremony will return to television later this year. The event is set to take place in Chicago, the city where Don Cornelius first launched Soul Train over five decades ago. The telecast will air on BET on 27 November and will be simulcast on CBS for the first time. BET President Louis Carr, a Chicago native, expressed pride in bringing the awards back to its birthplace. He noted that after a landmark year for BET, this return highlights the network's mission of uniting the community around culture and bridging the artists who established the sound with those who are advancing it. Spotify will serve as the exclusive music streaming partner for the franchise. Kimmy Summers of Spotify emphasized that Soul Train has always been more than just music – it has been a cultural force that has shaped style and sound for generations. She added that Spotify aims to help new listeners discover the legacy of R&B and soul while supporting today's voices. The upcoming show will honor both legendary acts and emerging artists who are carrying Black music forward. Performers and presenters will be announced at a later date. Past hosts have included R&B icons such as Dionne Warwick, Vanessa Williams, and Gladys Knight. Keke Palmer hosted the most recent Soul Train Awards in Los Angeles in 2023. Beyoncé holds the record for the most wins in the awards' history, with an impressive 25 trophies. The first Soul Train Awards took place in March 1987, while the original Soul Train variety show premiered in 1971 and ran for 35 years.
