NewsOctober, 20 B-52s to receive Hollywood Walk of Fame star
The B-52s are about to get their own place on Hollywood Boulevard: the band will be presented with the 2,861st star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on 29 October. Ana Martinez, who produces the Walk of Fame, said the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce was proud to welcome the group. She described the honour as a celebration of their unforgettable music, fearless spirit and the nostalgia they have given generations of fans, adding that their distinctive sound and energy had earned a firm place in Hollywood's musical history. Richard Blade, the SiriusXM radio personality, will serve as emcee. The Go-Go's, who were given their own star in 2011, and Fred Armisen – a musician, actor and comedian – are scheduled to speak at the ceremony, which will be streamed live. The star sits at 6212 Hollywood Boulevard, right in front of Amoeba Music. The band's commercial high point came in 1989 with Cosmic Thing, which climbed to No. 4 on the US Billboard 200 and spent 65 weeks on the chart. It produced two hit singles in a row, Love Shack and Roam. The original line-up was Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, Cindy Wilson, Ricky Wilson and Keith Strickland. Ricky Wilson died in 1985 from an AIDS-related illness, and Strickland stopped touring with the group in 2013. After announcing several farewell tours, the band is finishing its current Cosmic De-Evolution Tour, a co-headlining run with Devo, in Palm Desert, California, on 31 October.
