Ed Sheeran Drops B Stage Over Safety Fears

Ed Sheeran told fans at his Philadelphia concert that he scrapped the B stage from his set because he was worried about his own safety.

The B stage is the smaller platform positioned away from the main stage at big shows. Sheeran had planned to use one, but decided against it.

"I didn't know what this audience would be like tonight," he said. "I didn't know if I would have things thrown at me. I didn't know if people would be angry at me."

He went on to apologise for the show not being a standard Loop Tour date, explaining that he pulled the B stage because he was afraid of what could happen if he stood in the middle of the crowd.

During the performance, the Shape of You singer also said he had lost friends and family amid the controversy surrounding his tour.

At one point he sat cross-legged on stage and broke down in tears while talking about Macklemore being removed from the Loop Tour over his 'Free Palestine' remarks, and about the rest of his opening acts quitting in solidarity.

"In these situations you really find out who your friends are. It's been a weird week," he told the crowd, in a clip filmed by a fan.

He added that everything had happened very quickly, and that many people had urged him to cancel the tour while others he had known for years were backing away.

Sheeran said he had been told repeatedly to cancel and felt abandoned by friends, family and acquaintances.

Even so, he made clear that he was there for his fans.

"I see 50,000 people who haven't abandoned me," the Thinking Out Loud hitmaker said. "People will say what they want, but I am doing this for you. I love you. I love this."
