Greta Thunberg Criticizes Ed Sheeran Over Macklemore

Greta Thunberg has spoken out about the controversy surrounding Ed Sheeran's Loop Tour after he removed Macklemore as a supporting act.

The climate activist criticized the Shape of You hitmaker for what she called a "lack of spine" following his decision to drop Macklemore from the tour.

Earlier this month, Sheeran and his team pulled Macklemore from the support slot because of the rapper's "free Palestine" remarks during two shows in New Jersey.

On Monday, Thunberg posted on Instagram to say Sheeran should be "held accountable."

"Yes, Ed Sheeran should be held accountable for his lack of spine," she told her 17 million followers.

"But remember that we have to continuously apply the same pressure on all those complicit in all genocides."

Thunberg went on to say that the larger your platform and access to resources, the greater your responsibility. She encouraged her followers to apply that idea to themselves and to the institutions they belong to, and called for a push for boycotts, sanctions and divestments.

"If we, ourselves, are not stepping out of our comfort zones, we are not doing enough. Remember, silence is complicity, and you cannot be neutral in a genocide," she concluded.

Sheeran spoke about the situation at his first concert since the uproar, a performance in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Saturday night.

He said the pressure to remove Macklemore came from promoters and venue owners, among them billionaire Robert Kraft.

The British singer-songwriter admitted he had never seen himself as an "activist musician," but said his view had shifted after being drawn into a debate about freedom of speech and what he described as the most complex political issue on the planet.
