Miley Cyrus on Her Cold Tortoise and Hannah Montana

Miley Cyrus sat down with Apple Music's Zane Lowe and talked about the strange split between her calm home life and her life as a pop star while she was making the video for her new title track, Bass Persuades. A late-night shoot, she said, ended up bringing out her inner Hannah Montana in conditions she hadn't expected.

The video was filmed around three in the morning, Cyrus recalled, even though she likes to be in bed by seven in the evening. They were outside and it was freezing, and on top of that her tortoise Teru's heater had broken. She called it drama, explaining that a thermometer on her phone alerts her when he gets cold. There she was in silk panties and a leather jacket, dancing down the street, with one thought running through her head the whole time: the turtle was cold.

She was panicking, she said, but told herself this was just like Hannah Montana. In her mind, Miley Stewart's tortoise was cold while Hannah Montana stood there in her Dolce set, keeping things moving with all the dancers.

Cyrus also stressed how much rest, recovery and her morning routine with her rescue animals keep her grounded despite the demands of touring. She mentioned a recent post by Charli xcx about being exhausted after a show, saying it resonated with her deeply. Home, she said, is the reason she does things this way.

Her ritual is something she can't live without. Her tortoise is 20 years old and, in her words, a diva who expects his dandelion greens and yellow peppers each morning. Having that routine makes her a better person, she said, because it gives her time with a creature that has no idea who she is.

Bass Persuades, her tenth album, is out now on BMG. She is set to headline the Hollywood Bowl this October.
