NewsSeptember, 25 Madonna and Charli xcx Drop Danceteria Afterhours
Madonna and Charli xcx have released a new club track, Danceteria Afterhours. The single brings together two artists who have long pushed pop in fresh directions, and it taps into the spirit of Madonna's early club days. It is the first time the two have put out music as a pair. Production on the song comes from Madonna, Andrew Watt, Cirkut and Stuart Price. For months, the two have been hinting at a creative bond. They threw a CLUB CONFESSIONS party with Saint Laurent during Paris Fashion Week and traded light-hearted messages online, which only fuelled talk of a studio team-up. Danceteria Afterhours is available now, along with three limited-edition CDs. The track follows the success of Danceteria, the newest single from Madonna's chart-topping album Confessions II. The collaboration also comes after the pair publicly shut down rumours of friction. A line in Charli's Rock Music – “the dance floor is dead” – led some to wonder whether there was a rift, particularly with Madonna getting ready to release a dance-oriented album. Madonna answered with a disco-themed post that many read as a playful dig. The two later turned up together at Saint Laurent's menswear show in Paris, sitting side by side, smoking, hugging and dancing behind the DJ booth. Charli has since explained that the lyric is about her relationship with her album Brat, not about dance music itself. She added that she doesn't believe in rigid genre lines and thinks the current dance scene is in good health. Madonna, meanwhile, will open the MTV Video Music Awards this Sunday (27.09.26). It marks her first performance at the ceremony in 23 years and her fifth in total, more than any other artist in VMA history. She also leads this year's nominations with 13, a career best.
