Maren Morris Still Shocked by Tour Turnouts

Maren Morris admits she is "still shocked" when crowds turn out for her live shows.

The singer behind My Church has seen some fans drift away in recent years. She has spoken openly about political and social matters, and she has moved beyond country music into a space without genre boundaries.

So when she looks out at a full room on tour, the 36-year-old is still taken aback.

"I still just sometimes walk out and wonder, 'How are all these people here?'" she told Rolling Stone. She explained that this is not meant to play down her own work or her presence. From a young age, she said, she was taught by the book that there is only one right way to do things. Now that she is doing it her own way, it still surprises her that people keep coming.

Morris has made peace with performing in smaller, more intimate rooms rather than big arenas. In her view, an artist should not treat a step down in venue size as a failure.

"There's a lot of pride probably with artists that don't want to," she said. She compared it to the feeling that once you have played arenas or stadiums, moving to a lower capacity seems like a defeat. But it is not, she argued. Sometimes it has nothing to do with the artist at all – the world has simply changed. If it means fans still get to see you and escape for a night, she thinks it is worth taking the hit and playing the smaller room.

Morris toured with her album Dreamsicle last year. She described her music as her life's work and said she wants to place it somewhere it will be looked after. If that means a smaller setting, she is fine with it, because she will be able to give it more care.
