Lily Allen Says Longform Interviews Scare Her

Lily Allen has admitted that longform interviews make her nervous because of how they get picked apart afterwards.

Speaking to The Cut, the Smile singer explained that she has kept promotional conversations around her album West End Girl to a minimum. She feels restricted in what she can say about the breakup record, and she worries about the kind of headlines those discussions could generate.

"When I do longform interviews and people dissect them, I find that really painful," the 41-year-old said. She described herself as a deeply sensitive person who dislikes putting herself out there because of the backlash she receives, adding that she has no filter, was never media trained and has never worked out how to fake her way through it.

She also said she would like to appear on more podcasts and talk shows to stay part of the cultural conversation, but she is simply too frightened to do so.

West End Girl, her fifth studio album, arrived last October. It was written and recorded over 10 days after her marriage to David Harbour, known for Stranger Things, ended following allegations that he was unfaithful.

Allen said she does not object to people speculating about her private life, given how revealing the album is. What does upset her is when they get things badly wrong and spread rumours that are plainly untrue and that she cannot respond to.

She acknowledged that this is simply the price of putting her life into her work, and that she has to live with what she has already said and done. In her view, the mystery keeps people interested – if she explained too much, it would lose its appeal far sooner.

The Fear hitmaker also confessed that she enjoys fame and attention, but that she needs boundaries in place to safeguard her mental health. She feels too sensitive for the spotlight, and while there are aspects of fame she genuinely loves, she is not willing to keep them if they come at the expense of her wellbeing and peace of mind.

Allen is set to finish her West End Girl tour in Australia in November.
