Ed Sheeran Speaks Out on Macklemore Tour Exit

Ed Sheeran has finally addressed the controversy surrounding Macklemore's removal from his tour, saying the decision was not his to make.

The singer pointed the finger at "the venue and promoter," explaining that Macklemore's contract was with the promoter rather than with him. "Macklemore coming off tour was the promoter's decision, it was not mine," the 35-year-old wrote. "Macklemore's contract for the tour was with the promoter, not me."

Macklemore, whose real name is Benjamin Hammond Haggerty, was dropped as the opening act after delivering a pro-Palestine statement on stage at their New Jersey show on 4 September.

Following his exit, Ed's other support acts – American singer Finneas, Irish singer Aaron Rowe, Irish band Beoga and Danish pop group Lukas Graham – all pulled out of the tour in solidarity. The Shape of You hitmaker stressed he had no say in cutting the rapper from the lineup.

"After Macklemore's performances at my New Jersey shows, venues on my upcoming tour dates communicated that they would pull the shows if he was still supporting," Ed wrote. "I was informed that this stance was based on how Macklemore conveyed part of his message during his performance, rather than on everything that was said."

Ed said he attempted to find a compromise, but "the venue's and promoter's decision was final."

His statement directly contradicts Macklemore's claim that Ed was behind the decision. "Ed Sheeran and his team have made the decision to remove me from the Loop Tour," the 43-year-old Grammy winner wrote on Instagram on 14 September.

Ed also made it clear he wants fans to enjoy concerts without political controversy. "Those who come to my shows do not expect a political forum," he said. "I am not complicit. I have my personal views on this devastating conflict. Just because I choose not to speak publicly, it doesn't mean I don't have them, and it doesn't mean I don't care."
