Macklemore Gives $1M Tour Fee to Palestine Relief

Macklemore says he will hand over the $1 million (£750,000) he was paid for supporting Ed Sheeran to groups helping the Palestinian people.

The rapper lost his place on Sheeran's US Loop Tour earlier this week, shortly after giving a pro-Palestine speech from the stage at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

In a long social media post on Wednesday, Macklemore explained that his net earnings would go to organisations such as Palestine Children's Relief Fund, Heal Palestine, Gaza Soup Kitchen and Medical Aid for Palestinians, along with others.

He wrote that recent events had made him want to return the discussion to the Palestinian people, who he said are still being killed, still living under military occupation and still fighting for their freedom.

Macklemore added that the full $1 million of his net earnings from the Loop Tour would go to six organisations working directly to support Palestinians, and said they have spent decades without basic rights and should not have to wait any longer to be free.

He promised to keep standing with the Palestinian people and their struggle for liberation, and urged people not to lose focus when the news cycle moves on, closing with the words "Free Palestine."

The donation follows a difficult few days for Sheeran, who said in a statement on Tuesday morning that he had no part in Macklemore's removal from the tour and that he would rather stay neutral on political matters.

Every remaining support act on the Loop tour – Finneas, Aaron Rowe, Lukas Graham and Beoga – then announced they were pulling out in solidarity with Macklemore and the Palestinian people.
