Matt Willis: Charlie Simpson Was Like Voldemort

Busted's Matt Willis has told a previously unheard story about the pop-punk trio's reunion after a nine-year break. Speaking on The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X, he said that during the long estrangement, Charlie Simpson became a subject nobody in the group would bring up.

Asked by Chris Moyles whether the members had simply drifted into separate lives or were not in a good place, Willis compared his relationship with James Bourne to the one he had with Simpson.

James, he said, is his best friend in the world, and they have been close since they were 16. Through all that time the two stayed best mates, but they did not see Charlie. For roughly nine years, Willis said, Simpson was like Voldemort – he who shall not be named. Then he walked back into their lives and has stayed there since.

Willis called Simpson's return very weird, and explained that it came about when word got out that he and Bourne were planning the supergroup tour McBusted with McFly.

He went to Simpson's house, he said, because James had spoken to him once the McBusted plans were in motion. Charlie got in touch and asked them not to do it, saying he might want to come back. Willis admitted he did not think he had ever told that story before, adding that their response was that they were going ahead because the tour was already booked.

Even with the timing clash, the lines of communication stayed open. Willis recalled that the door was open, so they began having conversations with Simpson and then visited his house. He had not seen him for about eight or nine years, and the experience felt very strange.

Looking back at the atmosphere during that first meeting in nearly a decade, Willis acknowledged there was some tension. He described it as a bit of a power battle, with everyone wondering who held the power – and concluded that they all did. An hour in, though, things were great and everything was fine.
